The nightstand file
A nightstand is furniture, not bedding, so it's easy to assume a drink set on top of it is simply set down safely. The dimensions say otherwise: a nightstand is built to a height and shrunk to a footprint that put a drink in close to the worst spot available for it. Here's the physical case for why, and what it takes to change the outcome.
A nightstand's height isn't arbitrary — guides put it at roughly 24 to 28 inches (some run the range from 23 to 29), because the goal is a top that lands level with the mattress or a few inches above it, usually within about 2 to 4 inches. That's convenient for reaching a lamp switch without sitting up. It's also almost exactly the height of a sleeping arm, which means the drink sits right where the one motion most likely to meet it happens: not a considered reach, but the sweep of an arm that's still mostly asleep.
The footprint works against it too. A usable nightstand top typically runs somewhere around 18 to 28 inches wide and 14 to 20 inches deep — a shelf, not a table — and by the time a lamp, a charging phone, and whatever book or glasses got carried to bed have staked their share, what's left for the drink is whatever's still open. That's usually the outer edge: the point furthest from center, and the easiest place for a passing arm to catch.
Any object resting on a surface stays upright only as long as its center of gravity sits above its base. Push it far enough that the center of gravity crosses beyond the base's edge, and gravity finishes the job on its own — no further force required. A tall glass with a narrow base doesn't need much sideways motion to cross that line, and a hand searching in the dark supplies exactly that motion: reaching down onto something you can't see covers far less lateral distance than sweeping sideways to find it. What's actually touching the table matters as much as how it gets bumped. A container's labeled width and its true contact point aren't always the same number — cans taper in slightly right at the bottom edge, and a stemmed glass or a tapered tumbler can be narrower at the foot than anywhere else on it. The bottom inch, not the widest point on the vessel, is what a nightstand has to work with, and it's usually smaller than it looks.
A spill on an empty counter has nowhere much to go. A spill on a nightstand has company: a charging phone often sits inches away, and for some sleepers a CPAP machine's hose and humidifier tank share the same small shelf. Water and electronics don't mix well under any framing, and a knocked glass near a hose turns a wood problem into a machine problem. When the nightstand is already full, the overflow spot is the floor beside the bed — invisible once the lights are off, and exactly where a bare foot lands first getting up in the dark.
None of this requires carelessness. A cat testing a glass at the edge of a nightstand is running a well-documented attention-seeking play, not being clumsy — cats target objects sitting at an edge because the reaction is the point. A glass that slides and wobbles at the lightest touch is, from the cat's side, working exactly as intended.
Most of what people already reach for on a nightstand solves a vertical problem — keeping moisture off the wood — while the failure that actually empties the glass is horizontal: a knock, a sweep, a paw testing the edge, something pushing the glass sideways until it tips. A coaster is the clearest case: it does its one job blocking moisture from the finish, but has nothing to say about a sideways hit. A glass on a coaster tips exactly as fast as one without, coaster and all.
Carafe sets and hanging caddies miss the same axis a different way. A carafe set solves for having water on hand and for looking the part on a nightstand, not for a knock — an open top has nothing to close over if it goes sideways, and it claims a permanent piece of already-short real estate whether it's in use or not. A hanging caddy moves the drink off the surface, but everything holding it there is friction: a flap wedged between mattress and box spring, pressed down by nothing but the mattress's own weight. That margin is fine for a phone. A glass or bottle heavy enough to matter tests that margin with each reach in the dark, and a sagging pocket is the visible sign it's already gone.
A fix built for this has to answer the horizontal question directly. Width is the first part of the answer — spread the base wide enough and the same sideways nudge has to move a lot more surface before the center of gravity can cross the edge, true of any object regardless of what's sitting on top of it. Gripping the container itself is the second part: fins that wrap the bottom inch mean a bump moves the base and the drink together instead of tipping the drink out of a footprint that didn't move with it. Together, that combination is what resists tipping when the hit comes, and settles a bumped drink back level instead of letting the tip finish.
It only works if it meets what's really touching the table, which is why the range is defined at the base and bounded on both ends: about 2 to 3 inches across settles in fully, and the fins flex to seat something as wide as 3.15 inches in a snug fit right at that edge. Under 2 inches, there isn't enough surface for the fins to hold; past 3.15, they've run out of stretch.
None of that changes what a nightstand is built for or how little room it has to give a drink. It just changes what happens the next time an arm goes out sideways in the dark: the base moves with the glass instead of the glass off the base, and both hold steady until morning.
